Development firm Forest Street Partners recently announced that a 98-acre area just off of Hwy 182 (next to Triangle Drywall Supply) is under way in East Oktibbeha County in order to provide reasonably-priced housing for future workers in local industry, education, and more. The idea is that it will be centrally-located within the GTR region: “If you work at Mississippi State, you’re 15 minutes from work. … If you work at the [GT Industrial Park], you’re 15 minutes from work,” Golden Triangle Development LINK CEO Joe Max Higgins told The Dispatch. “It seems to me it’s just a neat place that you could live and be anywhere you wanted to be.”

District 2 Supervisor Orlando Trainer said that the development will have about 150 new houses in a variety of sizes, with some appropriate for a young laborer or professional who’s just getting started, some for large families, and everyone in between: “It’s going to provide some needed homes for these individuals who will be acquiring some of these jobs that are available at some of the industries that are here in the Golden Triangle,” he told The Dispatch on Thursday. “Plus it’s going to help add to the tax base once that development is built out.” The price points have not yet been announced.

Pace Stead, a Starkville resident and the firm’s project representative, said: “All three cities offer great stuff. . . When you get on the west side of town and the south side of town, no one wants to commute that far. Then you look at (Aluminum Dynamics) coming in, (Steel Dynamics) and all the other jobs.”

Infrastructure improvements along 182 have been approved, as well as the initial funding; bids have gone out.
